Alexei Krindatch is a sociologist of religion and the author of the Atlas of American Orthodox Christian Monasteries (2016), Atlas of American Orthodox Christian Churches (2011), Geography of Religions in Russia (1996).

Alexei was born in Moscow, Russia, to a family of scientists. He graduated cum laude from the Moscow State University (Moscow, Russia) with a major in human and economic geography. He completed postgraduate studies at the Institute of Geography of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow, Russia) and the program “Religion, Human Rights and Religious Freedom” at Columbia University (New York, USA).
From 1991-2004, Alexei Krindatch was a research associate at the Center of Geopolitical Studies of the Institute of Geography (Russian Academy of Sciences, Moscow, Russia). His work focused on the religion in the former Soviet Union and religious revival in the post-Communist states, especially Russia, Ukraine, Byelorussia, Georgia and Moldova. In 1996, he authored a book “Geography of Religions in Russia” (published by Glenmary Research Center: Decatur, Georgia) which traced the historical evolution of the “religious landscape” in the Russian Empire, the USSR, and post-Soviet Russia.
Since 2000, Alexei has been involved in the study of American Orthodox Christianity. During 2005-2009, Mr. Krindatch served as a research director at the Patriarch Athenagoras Orthodox Institute in Berkeley, CA. He created and administered the Institute’s “Parish Life Program.”
From 2011-2019, Mr. Krindatch worked as research coordinator for the Assembly of Canonical Orthodox Bishops of the USA. His study reports, maps, and articles on various aspects of the Orthodox Church life in America can be accessed and downloaded here: http://www.assemblyofbishops.org/news/research
In 2010-2011, Mr Krindatch directed the First US Census of the American Orthodox Christian Churches (as a part of the 2010 US Religion Census) which provided full data-base on US Orthodox Christian parishes (congregations) and membership and church attendance data:
• for each American Orthodox Christian Church (national denomination)
• for each local Orthodox Christian parish (individual congregation)
• for each geographic area of the US (county, state, or census region)
Since 2019, Alexei serves as a National Coordinator for the Second Census of US Orthodox Christian Churches / 2020 US Religion Census
Alexei Krindatch holds memberships in the number of professional associations (Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, Religious Research Association, Association of the Statisticians of American Religious Bodies). He is author of more than 50 publications.
