(1900-1973) A native of New York City, Williams earned his doctorate at Columbia University and, in 1956, received an honorary degree from Baker University, Kansas. Williams joined the faculty of Mt. Holyoke College in 1939, became a full Professor of Religion in 1945, and retired as Professor Emeritus in 1966.

Along with Walter Houston Clark, Williams was a prime mover in the establishment and early management of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion. He is the author of several books including What Americans Believe and How They Worship (Harper 1952, revised 1962).
