(1909-1987) Earned a bachelor's degree from Ottawa University in 1932, a Bachelor of Divinity degree from then Andover-Newton Theological School in 1935, and an M.A. and Ph.D. from Harvard University in, respectively, 1938 and 1950. Chairman of the Committee for the Scientific Study of Religion (the nascent SSSR), 1954-1955.

After service in the parish ministry and with the Y.M.C.A., he was Associate Professor, Andover-Newton from 1945 to 1958; Assistant Director, Danforth Foundation, 1954-1958; and Arthur Gosnell Professor of Social Ethics and the Sociology of Religion, Colgate Rochester Divinity School, 1958-1974. One of the founding members of the Society for the Scientific Study of Religion, he was the first editor of its journal, serving in that capacity from 1961 to 1965. Pemberton was the author of five books and numerous articles; his last book was Toward a Christian Social Ethic (Winston 1985).
