HERVIEU-LÉGER, DANIÉLE
(1947-) Directeur d'Études at the École des Hautes Études of the Centre d'Études Interdisciplinaires des Faits Religieux (CEIFR) in Paris, Editor-in-Chief of the journal Archives de Sciences sociales des Religions.

Beginning with research on Catholic students (Hervieu and Léger 1973) and then on the utopian reformulation of beliefs in the context of anti-institutional and communitarian movements (1983), Hervieu-Léger critically reviews the notion of secularization , which she understands not only as a loss of influence by religious institutions but also as the production of new forms of religion by modern societies, particularly through the possibilities for sociability provided by new religious movements (1986, Champion and Hervieu-Léger 1990). In this perspective, religion appears as a particular mode of believing in relation to the authority of a tradition and to the continuity of belief. It is conceived as a form of collective memory (1993a).
